SUN AWARENESS – DID YOU KNOW?......
Now that the sun has finally arrived on the Cote d'Azur and school has
finished for summer our children are spending more and more time in the
sun. Nothing beats putting something between sun and skin, but did you
know that a white wet T-shirt lets through nearly as much sun as no
T-shirt at all? With skin cancers on the increase it is really important
to protect our children's skin from harmful rays. UV Protective
clothing is specifically designed and tested for its purpose. The fabric
is very tightly woven which blocks out the harmful UVA & UVB rays.
In
addition we should all put sunscreen on children and keep putting it
on. Apply sunscreen half an hour before they get outside. Don't wait
until it gets hot. In the cool air of 10am the sun burns as fiercely as
at 2pm.Use a factor 15 or higher sunscreen, and a broad spectrum type.
But remember sunscreen isn't enough; children need a combination of
clothing, sunscreen and a hat to protect their face and eyes. The
Australians got it right years ago with their very successful
advertising campaign ‘Slip, Slop, Slap' - Slip on a Shirt, Slop on a
Hat, Slap on some Sunscreen.
DID YOU ALSO KNOW... that babies
burn faster than children or adults. So use an umbrella, beach tent or
the shade of a tree and never leave your baby in the sun. And remember
babies can also burn in the shade from reflected light, i.e. the sea. So
the key to sun awareness is being vigilant and sensible about the time
you spend in the sun with your children. Avoid the sun between mid-day
and 3pm when it is at its strongest.
Ideally don't use sunscreen
on tiny babies, as their skin is extremely sensitive and may not be
able to flush out the chemicals. As they begin to move about and you
need to use a sunscreen on exposed arms and legs, chose a recommended
product for babies with a very high SPF. (sun protection factor)
